Whitehall Elementary Continues 51-Year Memorial Day Tradition

Posted Date: 05/21/26 (02:52 PM)

Whitehall Elementary School proudly continued a long-standing tradition today as students, staff, veterans, and community members gathered for the school's annual Memorial Day Celebration, a tradition started 51 years ago by retired Whitehall teacher and veteran Joe Capron.

The ceremony honored the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the United States and reflected on the meaning and importance of Memorial Day.

As part of the ceremony, a flag lowering and dedication ceremony was held in which the old American flag was retired and a new flag was presented in memory of a Whitehall veteran. This year's flag was dedicated in honor of World War II U.S. Navy veteran Warren Hildreth.

Whitehall teacher aide Sue Ellen Ripley accepted the flag in memory of her late father, Warren Hildreth. Hildreth attended Whitehall School and enlisted in the U.S. Merchant Marines at age 17 before later joining the U.S. Navy, where he served until age 20. He was also a longtime member of Whitehall American Legion Post 83, serving for 61 years.

Whitehall Mayor Randall Lambert spoke during the celebration about the true meaning of Memorial Day and the importance of honoring those who served and sacrificed for the country. He also expressed pride in the students, staff, and community members who have continued the Memorial Day tradition at Whitehall Elementary for more than five decades.

The flag ceremony was presented by Mike Rocque, a member of the Whitehall Elks Lodge. Rocque also presented the POW/MIA flag and shared a reflective explanation of its design and historical significance.

Jenine Macura spoke about the American Legion and highlighted two of its most prominent organizations focused on youth and families: the Children's Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion.

Several individuals were also recognized with awards during the ceremony. The Jim Lafayette Memorial Service Award was presented to Mike Rocque, while sixth grader Matthew Atwood received the Gordon Foote Award. The Joe Capron Citizenship Award was presented to fifth grader Aleah Blanchard.

Citizenship awards were also presented to students across all grade levels in recognition of their character and leadership throughout the school year.

The Memorial Day Celebration concluded with each grade level performing a patriotic song, bringing the community together in a heartfelt tribute to those who served the nation.
